Denmark Backs Social Democrat Commissioner for EU

Copenhagen Proposes Niels Jørgensen for European Commission

Social Democrat Politician's Nomination Moves Forward

Denmark's government nominated Social Democrat Niels Jørgensen as its candidate for European Commissioner, the country's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced on Monday, August 22, 2023.

Frederiksen praised Jørgensen's "experience and qualifications," emphasizing his suitability for the role: "Niels Jørgensen has a solid background in European affairs and a deep understanding of the EU's institutions." Jørgensen, currently serving as Denmark's Minister for Foreign Affairs, has held several high-level positions within the Danish government.

The European Commission, the executive body of the European Union, comprises 27 Commissioners, one from each member state. The Commission is responsible for proposing and enforcing EU legislation, managing the EU budget, and representing the EU internationally.

Jørgensen's nomination is subject to approval by the European Parliament before he can assume the position of Commissioner. The Parliament will hold hearings with each candidate and vote on their suitability. If approved, Jørgensen will replace Margrethe Vestager, the current Danish Commissioner for Competition, who is set to step down at the end of October.

The nomination of a Danish Social Democrat to the European Commission reflects the country's commitment to EU cooperation and its support for center-left politics.

According to a recent poll, 73% of Danes believe that Denmark should remain a member of the European Union. The Social Democrats are the largest political party in Denmark, with 27.5% of the vote in the 2019 general election.
