Hungarian Grand Prix Qualifying: Norris takes Pole, Perez and Verstappen Close Behind

Lando Norris defied the odds and driving conditions to earn his first ever Formula 1 pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The McLaren driver delivered a stunning performance in the wet and unpredictable conditions, beating Sergio Perez by just 0.030 seconds, with reigning world champion Max Verstappen a further 0.036s adrift in third. It was a brilliant result for Norris, who has been in impressive form this season, and he will be hoping to convert his pole position into his first Grand Prix victory on Sunday, as he aims to join BAR team-mate Daniel Ricciardo as British F1 race winners.

Norris' pole position is McLaren's first since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix, and it is the first time a British driver has started a race from pole since Lewis Hamilton at the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. It was also a special moment for Norris, who grew up just a few miles from the Hungaroring circuit. He said: "It's an amazing feeling. I've always wanted to get pole position in Formula 1, and to do it here at my home track is incredible. The conditions were very tricky today, but I managed to put together a good lap when it mattered. I'm really happy with the car and the team did a great job. We'll see what we can do tomorrow, but we're in a good position."
